Social networks and should i start one

Post by gavpedz »

I was thinking about starting a social network, i understand i will never get anywhere close to the top dogs so figure it would have to be in a niche so it thought has phpbb got a social network i know this forum but if i started one would any actually use it?

Just fancy starting another site i guess

The big sites are very well established. I don't think it's worth it to be honest.

Make sure it's a good, focused niche. Trying to start a general social network today is not so likely to succeed.

Any problems in starting a single community with phpBB are magnified many fold when starting something that tries to encompass several levels above.

While they can work for a niche, often they do not solve the problem the niche requires other than fulfilling the "must use current buzzwords" category.

You need something different to have a succesful social network. For instance facebook started out only allowing registration if your school is added to their database, I'm not sure if it's open to all or still limited now?

Social networks are hard now, you cant really focus on a niche too much because anyone can create a social network. There's a website out there that will host a social network for you, but I forget what it's called.

If you live in a small town or community, you might have success. But you would have to find ways of making it interesting and worthwhile to use. It would be very hard.

You could do it as a learning experience, but I'm not sure how much traction you'll get.

Do it for fun but if it turns out not to be fun then don't bother. I'd sign up just from interest.

I would do it just as a hobby. It could be good experience. Find a niche that is interested for you and try this. I'm gonna do the same.

What type of social network?
Like myspace/facebook or like aim?

You could make lots of money of you attract users and provide advertisements :)
There was an article released by the AP that basically talked about how web advertising is on the decline so then again you might not.

But it depends what type of social network i think. ;)
