I think MSN messenger has been a joke from the beginning. I personally believe Yahoo and AIM have always dominated. Also, Windows, XP anyway, throws it in on a default setup. Well, "Windows Messenger". To me, that's bloat. If people want to use MSN, they'll download it.

Besides, I use Pidgin. It has all my IM needs in one, plus a nice plugin system.

I hope I'm wrong but I think I lost all contacts after the upgrade.

Hopefully I saved them in a different partition, just the effort to search.. I hope.

I use WL Messenger and the Live Mail app - got the beta's a few days ago and quite enjoying them so far. Especially the update to Mail - Option to quickly add a new mail account, re-designed toolbar - so I can junk mail more easily now
I see in messenger they've removed a few status options, now only 4. I always hoped they would allow you to customise your away message. I vote to bring back "Out to Lunch" - I used that constantly  I don't use any of the other programs, so can't comment :)

Live Messenger is a good tool and my preference as well when using Windows. I use Pidgin under Ubuntu and like it but not enough to convert to it under Windows. In the Linux world, I prefer Kopete over Pidgin.

That said, is Microsoft actually supporting two IM clients? I've used WLM for some time (and plain old Windows Messenger before that) and am a little confused about what MSN Messenger is all about relative to WLM.

Windows Live Messenger used to be called MSN Messenger. The last version to be named MSN was 7.5 as far as I remember. Everything after that was when they shifted to Live. Whether they are still supporting it, i'm not sure :)

People say MSN sucks, but what's the point in using a feature-packed IMer that nobody else uses? It's the only program that I will use just for that reason. Otherwise I'd use Skype.

You must be talking about client-specific bells and whistles and not IM connectivity. Since I'm not a big user of bells and whistles, using third party clients presents no problems that I'm aware of.

Pidgin is better in my opinion allthough it is buggy at times (Tried both Windows and Linux versions and both have bugs. Windows version is worst.).

I've never had a problem with it. Not sure what bugs you're talking about. I installed a music plugin to display my status as what song I'm playing, and I noticed every once in a while, Pidgin will completely close and when I start it back up, I have to re-add my accounts. But, that's the only problem I've ever ran into.

It sometimes strugles with big group conversations and it also has a bug where you have to highlight to see the last message. Only small tings really and perhaps something to do with the PC I use. The Windows version was bad just because of the operating system. It would crash constantly.
