Name the operating systems you have used..

Post by Green Light » Sun Oct 11, 2009 3:57 am

Well after going through allot of the general discussion, I've realized we talk allot about different operating systems.

List the operating systems that you've used over your lifetime..
also give one pro and one con. (don't tell me there's not one con, or your a liar :x )
Also, no fanboy comments. ;]

--
Ubuntu 8.0.4 - Free/Intel GFX driver issue
Ubutnu 9.0.4 Free/Better Intel GFX driver still some problems with the GFX.
Fedora 9 Free/No wifi
Windows XP - Gaming/lots of freezes.
Windows Vista - Gaming/Navigation is a bit messy
I've only used W7 a few times, I kept un-installing it.. and thus lost the .iso and key.. and can't get a new one :[

Although most of the cons are caused by the user, the reason why I list them is because there's a way to fix them but if it's to complicated to fix I'll call it a con.

Windows 95 - Don't remember it too much
Windows 98- Don't remember it too much
Windows 2000 - Junk
Windows ME - Crap
Windows XP (and all the 3 of service packs) - Was good until 2004, it just grew old
Windows Vista Home Premium - Looks nice, innovative vista cache system kept performance if you have more than a gig of ram
Windows Vista Ultimate - Not worth the upgrade money (from Home to Ultimate), I never use the language packs or the bit locker
Windows 7 Beta - Very buggy, FAST, bigger upgrade from vista to this then it was from xp to vista
Windows 7 RC - Less bugs, FASTER than beta, superior software and hardware compatibility

Ubuntu Linux: 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 (server editions) - Ran beautifully on old machines
Ubuntu Linux: 8.10, 9.04 (desktopeditions) - Redefined the use of GNOME
Fedora Linux - It was nice
Centos Linux - Never got a chance to play around with this
Red hat Linux - Used it for a class, never looked back at it

Mac OS 9.x - It works fine, some major hardware compatibilities set us back time and money
Mac OS X: 10.0, 10.1, 10.2 - Looks nice, performance lacks at times, works well with multi cores

EDIT:
Completely forgot:
Cisco IOS
MS Server 2008

Windows 95 - I didn't really understand what made a good computer at the time, I was just amazed at how something like that could work.
Windows XP - Yes, it's a big gap from Windows 95. I really hated it.
Ubuntu(All versions) - Good when it's used on the right hardware but it has bad compatibility with a lot of hardware.
OSX 10.5 Leopard - Very good but it had flaws. Not being able to drag and drop files between applications with the dock and dropping them onto applications to open them was a big limitation.
OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard - Fixes many things with Leopard including and removes the limitation from Leopard that I mentioned. The speed is very good but Snow Leopard comes with a new flaw. ITunes opens automatically when the play/pause button is pressed with no hack. That is seriously annoying. There is also a bug with using the function keys with iTunes open for some reason. I think that began happening with iTunes 9.

You probably don't want me to list everything since I would start with CP/M... on a system with the S-100 bus to boot.

Heh. Pun. "To boot"

-I started on Windows XP in High School
-Switched to Linux (settled on Ubuntu)
-Back to Windows (XP then Vista) when I started working
-Dual boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu (8 then 9) since

Nearly all of my OS experiences have been on cheap Dell laptops (which have worked beautifully). And I never had any major trouble with Windows or Ubuntu. I've hit a few snags along the way that had to be sorted, but nothing to sour me on XP, Vista, or Ubuntu.

2000 was a workstation desktop was opposed to a typical consumer desktop, XP was basically 2000 + Me with pretty GUI. If you can do without movie maker etc and pretty GUI 2000 was awesome. ;)
