I was on a forum, there was a quarrel between the administrators and some users. Some of them were banned.

I setup a forum on a free server and told two of them (using aMSN) they could join it. They told other people who told other people... other users left the first forum, some others decided to be on both forums.

After one year of that "free server" forum there were 500 users (more or less) and I decided to buy a domain and build my own forum (phpBB, obviously :D ).

Today, after one year on the new server, I have more or less 600 users and I can pay for all hosting costs using revenues from Google Ads and an affiliation program with an italian site that sells books. This year my revenues were 180 euro (before tax) higher than my costs, so in a few centuries I should be able to buy a Porsche

Ciao,
Max

I already had a very successful and popular website with lots of content and traffic. I added the forum to my existing site and it exploded from there.

In theory, my forum began as a Guestbook in '98. Then it became a simple threaded message board in '99. Then it became a UBB board in '00. Then it became a phpBB2 forum in '04, and finally a phpBB3 forum in '08.

Cloned myself. :|
Did anyone make a great forum of a free domain?
My site and forum were on a free hosting plan for about the first year. Now the 6th anniversary is coming up on the 12th. But I pay now.

My website is a personal site. The domain, madd74.com, is on a dedicated server. It went online in 2001, however my forums did not go live until 2003. I got my first members by pimping out to my friends :)

Back in the day, before I was a dad, I had free time and this was how I shared with others what I was doing. Also, there was no such thing as "Facebook" "Crapspace" "Twitter" and the like, so this was my mini social networking with my friends.

Wow, things have gone a long way since then, and thanks to places like facebook, and some dedicated server issues (causing my PHP to run so flipping slow it was not funny), I have all but lost my users... plus I "lost" a few friends :\

However, I have a lot more things going for me, and have picked up a new member here and there :D So yeah, I do not have quite the traffic that a lot of the others do, however I *do* have some senority

{flexes muscles... that sag and then drag on the floor}

Depending on the type of site you could find similar forums and make a new thread advertising your forum. It might not be the best way but it has worked for me in the past, especially if the forum is OLD and not up to date!

Most of my websites are niche websites, and the one's that use PHPBB I just did some great SEO and word of mouth.

My actual forum members were got by pretty much spamming the link around a few places (i know its bad, but it actually works)

Now days, most of my members come from Google or Facebook.

My most popular forum currently has just under 6,000 users, with around 180 users logging on a day. getting around 4-6 new members a day and growing.

The site has been up quite a few years now, and now that I'm on PHPBB3, the site seems to becoming more popular and even better SEO now :D

I just need to fight tonight. :|

My site has been up just over two years, in response to moderators from another site simply checking out for the holidays. Spam and porn links went through the roof, so I took up the challenge.

That site is still up, barely. Mine is getting stronger, and I dread the day I'll need to buy backbone bandwidth. (That's a dream anyhow. Nobody get tense just yet!) I got my first members by staging a loud and semi-rude protest.
