What did you do to start your site off?

Did anyone make a great forum of a free domain?

I had been working on an active blog and a podcast with a small team of people. We decided to start a forum together. :D So we began with four or five active producers of content. The audience for the blog and podcast followed us to the forum (which is now home to the blog as well).

The forum was a means for distribution of some of my programs. The URL was given to some of my friends and I posted it on another board on MSN and it's been active ever since. I've not really gone looking for members through things like Google search results and other forums but I've gathered almost 5000 users to date since Nov. 2004.

Word of mouth is your best friend ;)

I just put the forum online and slowly people started to register. First it was just me and my brother and sister, them my mother joined and we started posting questions and answering each other's questions, then some of our friends joined and then they told their friends and soon other people started joining. It was a long time ago when I first started a forum to discuss local community issues for our private development community.

i first established alot of social network and forum profiles and built them up, took a while, then made my own forum and gained traffic from sig links and seo anchor sites i'd acquired over the years.

Why would you do that to friends? Do you have all complete strangers added?

Really? Surely they would just block you instead.

I have a lot of peopled I've met online through the years. Games, various websites, chats, etc, and I keep in contact with a lot of people so I just give my site link out to them and they spread it and if you give it enough time, your forum will grow.

Also, affiliating with other related sites greatly helped me as well.

Except in a few rare situations, the only way you're going to have a popular forum is if you have a website with lots of high-quality content on it that gets lots of traffic. People aren't just going to sign up to a forum and start chatting with strangers without any incentive to do so, and the ability to discuss stuff that your website is showcasing is the best incentive that there is.

True Pezzoni ! Nicely put. Location location location for property, Content content content for websites, Success depends on "Hard Smart Work" , if it was easy to have a successful forum everybody would be accomplishing it.

A friend of mine started a free forum and he ran it for about 5 months, slowly getting members. I told him I had space on my VPS, so he bought the database backup from the free forum, and it is now hosted on my server (in which I inherited an Admin position). It gained in popularity significantly, as we are almost at 50,000 posts, with about 7 months of being online. We are in the process of expanding it and getting some real juicy content up.

if you can avoid the freeforum, that's great, but if you have decent activity on a free forum, GET YOUR OWN HOSTING, buy that DB backup. It is truly worth it.

My forum started off as I asked some friends if they would like to join. :D Then began promoting on promotion websites.
