I believe that apart from the 3GS being bigger, it looks even bigger than it actually is. So I would have to disagree a bit on the 'it looks large'. But again that is my personal opinion.

The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on.

But apart from all my "Look this is a brilliant device" talk, I do agree with you that you should first wait for reviews. In my country it will be in July when the iPhone arrives, so that means that all American sites have already published there reviews.
But the only thing which could prevent me from buying the phone, if it turns out in the reviews, that the iPhone camera is rubbish, the build quality sucks and that reception is bad. Because I'm already convinced regarding the software, and yes I tried it on my friends iPhone, and I really like the new design.
The software is also the main reason why I'd prefer the iPhone, over Android/Windows Phone 7/Black Berry/Palm.
