how was this forum done?

I came across a post here when someone said gaia online forums was done using phpbb . http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum i am fascinated by the style of the forum and i would like to know if this was truly done by phpbb ? if yes how , which style or skin or whatever was used in doing this .

Well, I'm sure the styling is possible in phpBB3, although a few MODs would be needed to do a few things.

However, sorry to disappoint, but GaiaOnline uses a very heavily modified version of phpBB2. In fact it's probably been so heavily modified that the code doesn't even resemble phpBB anymore.

Actually what i like about gaiaonline forums is the forums index http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum and how it was broken into different categories for example click on HOT TOPICS and it shows some categories in there http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/hot-topics/c.27/ , however i want my thread and post sections to still remain like that of a regular PHPBB forum and not like the clustered up thread / post section of gaiaonline

Gaia's forums probably resemble phpBB (code-wise) more than people think - at it's core, it's still a forum. But yes, it is a heavily modified version of phpBB, but it's not impossible. The categories system themselves look like they can be easily achieved by simply styling. Instead of displaying the categories as a container for the forums (as they are now), we would expand that and only offer links to the sub-forums.

Hi Sam so i would like you to like give a brief explanation on how you think the gaiaonline forum index and categories was built using the areas i made bold on your previous post

it looks like it is just done by creating a custom page that lists the main forums and their subforums in a different way than normal.
if you click through each section, it is just like the normal way it works here but the layout is different.
