What should I know about IPV6?

As a webmaster, what should I know about IPV6? All I know is that it can give everyone and their lego blocks an assigned ip address because IPV4 is losing the amount of slots available for unique IP addresses and IPV6 has an insane amount of slots.

So.. Basiscally, is phpBB ready for this transition because it has already started commercially and we're on the last IP blocks now so time is certainly a factor. Secondly, what things should I know such as new coding practices, and even general information about the thing that has value to learn. And lastly, has anyone tried it yet? Is it broken? Uptime/downtime terrible? faster or slower? etc..

I've never tested it before, but apparently there are only minor issues. The following thanks to A_Jelly_Doughnut.

I believe everything works properly when the end user is logging in from an IPv6 computer. There just are some potential problems when the hosting server is using it.

Well that's good to hear. I'm sure that 3.0.9 will have these issues addressed seeing as ipv6 is pretty much here now. Although this does sound like an expensive switch, can those with ipv6 enabled still go to ipv4 sites? If the server is ipv6 then does that mean that those without it can't access it? I feel like this will end up forcing websites having mirrors of themselves which could cost twice as much until the transition is over =/

Not necessarily. A server can be assigned both an IPv4 and IPv6 address, or many addresses. Any website on that server can respond to both an IPv4 and IPv6 request. Where the issue occurs is typically at the DNS, infrastructure, and client level, with clients being the least of worries since all major OS's at this point fully support IPv6.

IPv6-only is the issue. If a site is also accessible by an IPv4 address, there's no issue at this point.
