It came to my board email adress from phpbb840@gmail.com. I will not contact the aythor eitherway, but i want to know if such emails can come from the support team. Thanks in advance.

I just go with the fact that it's a GMail address with a number in the user name.
If it isn't from *@phpbb.com then it isn't official.

Note that it's not hard to fake the sender address. You would be able to tell from a look at the e-mail headers, but at first sight it could appear authentic.

I vet my emails something chronic, but ye, I get your point.
There is ofcourse the common sense approach, If it did look real to me I would
Never reply directly to the mail, I would still first check it's validity with the known official site.

The big giveaway in this emails legitimacy is this chaps punctuation, it's all over the place.

I got the same email too and know several other phpBB board owners that go it too.
I am quite sure that this is waves from the time where phpbb.com got hacked.
