Install them all, try them all, and see which one you like.

I've never tried the others. phpBB does what I want it to do and it's free.

You're on a phpBB support site. You're bound to hear a one sided opinion of what people like about it. Installing a board (any of them) only takes a couple of minutes. They all work slightly differently so it comes down to personal preference.

we all love everything about it. it is the most wonderful bb since we were hammering our messages into stone tablets and carrying them across the land via dino-taxis.

what do you expect to see here?

read the first page of the site to get the official words about phpbb

do the same for the others.

why are you making this such a big deal.

as was said, install them all. most hosting companies offer the one click installs in the cpanel.

although we do not support those, it would be a quick and easy way to install them all and see what you like.

then if you choose phpbb ( of course you will ) then delete all those that you installed and come here and follow the instructions to install the correct version you get here and we will be happy to help you with any problems you MAY have.

luck,
robert

There isn't one.

MODs require you to edit the code.
That will change with the 3.1x line.

I'm sure there are lots of MODs that lots of people would like but somewhere you have to draw the line and say these are included as standard and those are not.

It's a discussion board, so the ability to add lots of frivolous text decoration seems a little silly so phpBB just has the basics and if you want to add more you can.

Ad management again is a MOD or you can just drop google ads straight in to the appropriate pages.

Most mobile hardware now runs native browsers such as safari which display the board just fine. You can also add tapatalk which is a one folder upload for app access.

There are no right or wrong or best MODs to add for users, admins or visitors. You add what you need.

IMO mybb is pretty nice, but their community stinks.

  • MyBB seems to be most interested in adding every feature possible (eg. pretty URLs) and advertising how many lines of code they have.
  • SMF wasn't open source when I started using phpBB.
  • phpBB best fit my needs.
Hence, I'm using phpBB at the moment. ;)

When I was first looking for software I evaluated several, including some non-free boards. I picked phpBB because it was free, but more importantly because of the folks on this site. The active support area, the fascinating things some MOD authors are doing, it all made my decision very easy. I've never regretted it.

For me I will choose phpbb against mybb or smf because phpbb are very friendly and easy to explore.
