80% of children lie about their age to use sites like Fbook

Post by noth »

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/ju ... cebook-asa
The UK advertising watchdog has criticised the lax age verification systems used by websites such as Facebook, after finding that more than 80% of children lie about their age when using social media.

The Advertising Standards Authority uncovered the issue while conducting a survey assessing what kind of ads young people see and whether companies are sticking to the UK advertising code.

The survey found that 83% of the 11 to 15 year olds whose internet usage was monitored registered on a social media site with a false age.

Just over 40% of the children signed in stating they were over 18 years of age, with one even claiming to be 88.
Predefined groups in phpBB3 include Registered COPPA users to include a screening process for "underage users" but what is the screening process? To ask the applicant to indicate if they were born after 27 July 2000? (if so, they are under 13) but hey, THEY CAN LIE!!

Facebook is now coming under fire for doing exactly the same! They ask the applicant for their date of birth but this is deemed lax age verification

so instead of asking an applicant for their date of birth or " were you born before 27 July 2000?" what are social media sites supposed to do? your thoughts?

phpBB adds this to any application by a person "admitting" they were born "after 27 July 2000"
COPPA compliance

and people are just now realizing that kids ( or anybody ) can and will lie?

having age restrictions for anything online is really an exercise in futility. I can't think of any possible way to verify age or anything else online.

I am not saying that anybody of any age should be able to see/use sites that are not appropriate, I am just saying that there is no way to control it.

COPPA age is set at 13
Facebook age is set at 13
Twitter age is set at 13

but in reality we have huge amounts of children of age 11 and 12 probably less joining the sites without too much of a problem

Do we want children of age 11 and 12 probably less joining these sites? or are we just powerless to prevent it? in many cases the parents collude with the children to enable them to join Facebook and Twtiter that is just the world we are in now

we are powerless to prevent it.

doesn't matter what the age limit is set to. how can anyone enforce it when you are online?

it is like asking "are you male or female", "black or white" , "animal or mineral" etc. how would you know if they are lying or not? you can't know.

so why do we even bother setting a COPPA question in phpBB? it is nothing less than a farce and a waste of core space!

why do Facebook even ask for a date of birth when 80% of children lie about their age ? it is all a pretense to look as if there is a system there, when in fact it is a shallow con :x

there is no system - it's all a sham

same with twitter, every site that even puts the question there is taking part in a sham that we all know about, why does this persist? drop the questions from the sites including COPPA because it's all a rather large waste of time

Parents should take some responsibility in what their kids are looking at.

If they're going to let their kids have laptops and tablets then they need to learn how to configure their router to limit access to sites they don't want them to see and they need to monitor the traffic for what sites their kids are looking at.

what technology?

there is no technology that can tell if someone is lying about their age or anything else when filling out a form on a website.

That is so true, now here a question, do porn sites have the same issue with keeping under 18's out of their site?

Even Gmail limits accounts to over 13. But I wanted to get my 9 year old an email address, so I faked the age for her. But I do monitor the other sites she goes to and check everything out to be sure it is safe.

A friend has a phpBB site for a radio show with a target audience of 8-12. While most of the users are older, some do register that are under 13. They DO send in the COPPA form. But most later change their age to something else in their profile because it is funny. We have a few 100 year olds. :P
