Pros and cons of one large site to multiple sites

Post by mals69 »

Example: A large single website that consists of a community forum, a gallery, classifieds - compared to putting each subject of community, gallery, classifieds on its own domain ? (community.com gallery.com classifieds.com)

One pro of having everything in one domain is that you can use SSO so that you only need one login to access everything.

One con is that you can't have anything on it own server (unless you go to complex load balancing)

Pro of having things in their own sub-domain - You can have each site on it own server

Con you can't really have SSO (you can but it would be more work to get it working).
Please note that I will not be porting any of my mods to phpBB 3.1. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

I think it all depends on the individual size/traffic of each subject.

The natural process is to start simple, and expand as needed.
That's why many companies start with a single server/database, and split it into many servers/databases when needed.

So as a general rule:
With small sized or low traffic subjects, I would go for a single site.
With huge sized or high traffic subjects, I would go for multiple sites or sub-sites.

One good thing about my cloud server is I can add and remove load balancers as required. That way I can keep everything in one, central location making it easier to find.

Don't get me wrong, subdomains are great and as specified in a prior post, each subdomain can be on it's own server, but you can also have your SQL on it's own server, mail on it's own server, HTTP on it's own server and DNS on it's own server to help share the load of high-resource applications (this is how I have it with multiple virtual cloud servers for each application).
