Zero.
Costs are covered on various sites by sponsors, google ads or member contributions.

More than I should - but a lot less than some other "hobbies" would cost

Same thing here exactly! My site doesn't have any ads, so I have a shared hosting and a dedicated IP and then some xtras in the course of the year that adds up. But still a lot less than other 'hobbies' would cost. :D

I don't take member contributions for various reasons.

I use Xenforo for my main forum. Once I year I pay: $40 for renewals, $40 for hosting, $12 domain renewal.

Just hosting, which includes two forums, a site and some more. About 10 USD per month.
Also donated for couple of extensions here, and for joomla.

p.s. how big are your boards? my main is one ~600K posts.

~700K, with ~10K new posts every month, hosted on redundant own servers

That's nice traffic. My forums have slowed down in the last few years (social media). I assume I only get 1.5K new posts per month...

We have not noticed any slowdown ... but on the other hand, without social media it would be 20K now. Who knows.

In phpBB 3.0.x I had a nice stat mod: Advanced Statistics MOD by phpBB3-mods.com which showed me the exact figures.
I am paying a programmer to port something similar to phpBB 3.1.x ext now.

I spend my time, my energy, my sibling's money, so I can pay for webhost. Ahihihihi.

But who doesn't like to spend more, especially when you're earning money. You'd like to amplify, customize it more. If I can afford the service of developers, I'd do that. There are so many great developers here.
