Maybe my view of chat boxes is very simplistic but as I see it every comment made in a chat-box is a post lost to your forum.

You could end up with a thriving chat-box and a stagnant forum.

Swings both ways, I see your point about losing forum posts to shoutbox. But a shoutbox can also help keep users coming back and not get bored because nothing is going on much with forum posts made without having a shoutbox. I do have a shoutbox and "definitely" feel it's needed, without it I don't even see a point me keeping the forums alone going.

chats are great for sports forums, for use during the course of a game, can't really duplicate the experience using posts, just can't see all of the replies/comments at a glance when using posts, like you can with chats... that said, i can't find a chat that doesn't lock up my board when more than 10 users join in....

I don't like chats on bulletin boards. It just seems not professional.
