Microsoft buys Github

Post by david63 »

Just been reading that Microsoft had bought Github for $7.5bn.

Let's hope that it does not go the same way as other MS purchases! Could end up as a new "hackers paradise" like most other MS products.

Is there any other alternative out there?

Gitlab is the obvious alternative I'd say.

But I won't run immediately, MS today isn't MS from the nineties. I don't expect them to change the whole service or the license.
My extensions:
Simple CMS, Feed post bot, Avatar Resize, Modbreak, Magic OGP, Live topic update, Modern Quote, Quoted Where (GDPR) and Autoresponder.
Newest: FAQ manager for 3.2

Like my work? Buy me a coffee to keep it coming. :ugeek:

I saw that this morning and I agree, ms will probably cut it up. I see there’s already grumbles that they’ve moved or hidden the Linux repo. It could be worse, it could be IBM who have a reputation for ruining things like Lotus for instance, notes and 123 and Network Solutions, the list goes on. What makes GitHub so valuable?

To MS - access to millions of pieces of code?

I would say "Time will show". If MS doesn't want to ruin their reputation completely then they will do nothing to affect it.

Or, as most of the big corps do, buy it before someone else does.

But most of it is public anyway. So I am not so sure about their intentions.

But somehow and at some time MS wants to get back their invested money ;)

I agree but finding it from the "outside" is a lot more difficult than finding it from the "inside"

The logic alternative would be https://bitbucket.org/ IMO.

Having access to the Github database is a good opportunity to run meta analysis and to see who cooperated with whom and where, plus which code is used elsewhere and thus has the same bugs and security holes to be used. Is nobody of you afraid?

I think that MS needs Github and didn't want that somebody could put his hands on such a strategical tool.

One should consider that all MS code now takes the form of deposits, not necessarily public.

Some time ago an April Fools was posted (it was 2010), which ironically stated that phpBB had been bought by Micro$oft.

Let us hope that that crystal ball is still clouded.
