Quick observations:
- Republicans calling for it seem to be typically aligning with the call for a reg to demand the FTC to come up with whatever rules governing a limited set of types of insittutions (ie, financial) barring a few
- Socialist mindsets/mentalities like that of AOC and Sanders are still in the very very small minority in Congress, based on the reaction to the socialist comments in the SOTU
- The GAO Only interviewed large companies such as Apple and Google that are pro-GDPR out of potential anti-competitive stances, no representation of the smaller tech sector
- The GAO became surrounded in controversy last year, after it came out that at least auditor used GAO resources and work hours to push a socialist agenda
Personally, I don't picture anything (major) happening. We may see something pre-empt state regulations calling on the FCC to change enforcement methods of existing privacy laws, but past that, with a right-wing administration and still a GOP majority in the Senate, any kind of a EU-style socialist reg is highly unlikely.
Then again, these are the same congressman that asked Mark Zuckerburg with a straight face if Facebook showed advertisements to bring in revenue...
