Link to my external harddrive?

Post by Dckolt »

Hello!

I just got a web server up and running and installed phpBB.

Is it possible for me to create a new topic and then link to a file on my external harddrive?

The server is running on ubuntu and the path is: /media/hero/storage4/traningc2.rar

I tried messing around with Traning video #2

But it just shows up in plain text.

Then i thought about changing the upload directory to my external harddrive and just upload trough the forum, but i cant seem to get that to work either? I tried typing in the local path but not sure if this is even possible.

I hope somebody can help me out, im pretty new at this :)

even if your hard disk can be linked, it will be available to you alone.

its better to sync to a popular storage hosting system (eg. google drive)
& use its web links

you could just drag those files you want into a directory on your site like http://yoursite.com/storage/ and link to it
or you could attach them in posts

I just wanted to host everything on my own web server :D

Just like making a attachment to a post on the forum, that link directs to "files" on my computer but the problem is the drive the web server is installed on isnt very big and thats why i have a external harddrive plugged in and then i wanted to link to the bigger files there.

The web server is installed on a very small drive :/ Its a laptop with limited upgrade possibilities, so i plugged in a external harddrive and wanted to link to those files.

but i did do a quick search and came up with https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/urlmapping.html

is this board /site open to the world? if you are hosting a website on your home server then your ISP could shut down your internet. most of them do not allow this. also, unless you know what you are doing, opening up a web server to the world is very unsecure and will make all of your network open to the public.

with the price of hosting so cheap it just does not make any sense to do this if you are at all serious about your website.

Create a hard link inside your HTTP server root to any path of your external HDD. Problem solved.
