Anybody remember Big-Boards??

Post by JLA »

Anyone here remember the Big-Boards ranking website? Apparently they shut down several years ago. Are there any other sites similar that provide ranking of forums?

Thanks

yep, I remember it. GIA was usually at the top back then, but phpbb.com was up in the rankings for posts/members etc. at one point.

Yes, GAIA Online was #1 - with over 1 billion reported postings. Lanzer from the site contributed alot of info about phpbb2 from their experiences. I'm curious just how much phpbb2 is really left in their site..

Yeah, I remember reading alot of speculation about that - and even Lanzer's comments and postings about their changes made me think that too.

His postings were a tremendous help and we a great starting point for our site.

We've changed our board considerably - but it is still all phpbb2 based at the core. We've just made some improvements over the years that has helped things run better under the circumstances.

years ago? it was many many years ago,

i remember them, people were paying top dollars just to get on their list

those were the days when forums were at the top of popularity

forums have really gone down, social media have almost killed them all

forums failed to innovate, so they slowly died,

there are still many forums out there but even so they still don't get as much traffic as before,

ad block killed alot of the smaller forums too

happy days and sad days

My recollection was you never needed to pay for inclusion on the list at Big-Boards. You just included a bit of code (customized for your board type) in your footer and their bot checked your stats daily for updates. I think they did have a fee if you wanted to rush the initial submission process but not sure why anyone would have paid that as it took only about a week for our board (very small at the time) to be included back in 2005

curious, if your board was small why would it be listed on that site? it was for the largest bulletin boards on the web at the time.

Going from memory - they let anyone sign up to be ranked - only requiring their code being put into footer. The code showed a little banner with your Big-Boards ranking number if you chose the option for it to be displayed. For example here back on August 28 2005 they had 1300 boards ranked

The last capture seems to be May 27, 2013 and 2243 boards were listed
