Why are people doing mentions

Post by qcz »

Why are people doing @username on this forum?

There isn't a mentions function enabled, is there?

Many different topics throughout the board.

It's common on a lot of forums which don't have a mentions feature, basically just lets other members know who they are referring to etc

Couldn't they just use quote, or at least just type the name?

But yes, now I know why they do it.

They could use the quote, but if they were going to quote 2 or 3 members the post would be very long as the quote box takes up a fair bit of room,

Of course those who do use the mentions' extension may just be used to typing that way so it may come naturally to them when they post on the support forum.

Ok.

Yeah, I forgot that quotes can include previous quotes.

I imagine it started eons ago, the @ is an ‘at’ so it would make sense to use @username to get their attention.

Not necessarily, if they quote the post then edit it, removing the text leaves you with the username and a link to the post in question for example:

There is hardly ever any need to quote a complete post.

True but the quote box runs right across the screen, so if you're replying to more than 1 person you've got 2 or 3 yellow boxes running across the post,
Even if you quoted 1 line of text from each post that's about 40px per box and possibly 60px on a smaller screen.

Where as...

@Lumpy - I found it on this forum, @QCZ - Oh ok I'll try it, @Mick - I'm not sure.

One line, three replies ;)
Everyone has their own ways though, I've seen forums where the admins are extremely fussy and edit literally every post to format it is so it looks nice on the eye,

But doing that does not notify the user it only indicates that the message is referring to them, whereas quoting will send a notification (subject to user settings)

Since user mentions will be included in 4.0, I would assume they will be tied into the notifications system in some form.
