Should phpBB have a paid version?

Post by Random American »

Inspired by this post: viewtopic.php?p=15634371#p15634371

Does anyone here think that phpBB should have a paid version similar to other forum softwares? Some people think that phpBB should offer paid services not only to raise money, but to make the software more popular by offering features that many are willing to pay for inside the core code. Does anyone think that would be a good idea?

Please note that I do not support the idea, but thought it was worth discussing.

I don't

In theory if you had a paid version then you would be able to have one, or more, full time developers who could create new features but you would have to have those new features to entice people to buy phpBB in the first place - something of a chicken & egg situation.

I don't either, but I thought this was worth discussing due to what the other user posted.

I wouldn't like the idea to have a paid version, there are other ways to raise money.

A lot of open source software projects get money by offering official paid plugins or themes, specialized services (like configuring the software, customizations) or provide a hosted version of their software, so the user does not have to worry about managing their website.

I vote no as well. what would you add to phpbb core that would make it any better than it is now?
paid extensions, styles, etc. already exist if you want something that is not available for free already.

I updated the OP to clarify that I do not support this either. By the way, did I post this in the wrong forum?

Well, ops. All well, I don't think this topic is worthy of phpBB Discussion anyway.

It's because I only read it before it was edited. I didn't know they redacted their posts! I just saw that now. Obviously I wouldn't make this in response to a smilie.
