Flash: So long and thanks for all the lulz

Post by smithy_dll »

Flash player is no longer supported as of a few days ago and will no-longer play content in a few days time. It's been a long time coming since Steve Jobs mocked flash and held up HTML5 as the replacement that would be supported on the iPhone.

Having once maintained a Flash BBcode MOD, it's now officially over.
[flash] is ON
Can now become OFF.

What are some of your favourite flash moments?

I knew Flash (it's a name, hence uppercase) even before Adobe aquired it, when its filename extension SWF was accurate (Shockwave Flash). I experimented with scripted text animations a bit and the results pleased me.

The one I remember most is Joe Cartoon's Frog in a Blender. It was in an era where such silly short click-only "games" became popular because the concept was new and not every needed a separate installation. I still have it as EXE right here ("frogbender.exe", 663 KiB, dated 1999-08-31, internally Flash Player 4.0 r7) and it still runs today, not needing a Shockwave/Flash player installation.

Joe Cartoon was brilliant, I’ve had many an irreverent chuckle on that site.
