Switching Hosts?

Post by bubbathegimp »

A question for those that have been through it,....
How long after "transfer pending" on ICANN does it usually take?

My contract was up for renewal so I decided to move away from the Reptile that will be nameless :D to another host.
they had a 3 year deal, so I took advantage, and also changed registrar,,
copied everything i wanted onto the new server.

I was told that it usually takes 24-48 hours to take effect, that was Monday.....
still waiting to go live on the new host...

If you are referring to DNS propagation then it can take anything up to 72 hours, although quite often it is significantly less.

Did you ask your new register? They should be able to answer such questions.

So have you gone back and asked them why it has not happened in that time-frame?

I assume you are referring to a domain registrar switch, which is different process than switching hosts.

If that's the case, it could take up to 1 week, however in some cases you could speed up the process by confirming the transfer on the old registrar.

I had a case with a client that the old registrar refused to transfer the domain when everything was ok, in that case you could seek support to the ICANN.

And the moral there is not to have your domains and hosts as one and the same.

I have always had by domains registered with one company that is totally independant of the hosting company - that way you can switch hosts any time.
