I'm tempted to dress in all black with a ski mask and chainsaw, hide in the dark bushes until kids come ring the doorbell, and then jump out and exhale a loud evil cackle while revving the chainsaw.

... or I'll probably just stay inside and pretend not to be in. :P

It's a relgious event. It's in preparation for All Saints day (Nov 1) where you scare away all the evil sprits. The day after (Nov 2) is All Souls day.
Wikipedia wrote: The term "Halloween" derives from Hallowe'en, an old contraction, still retained in Scotland and some parts of Canada, of "All Hallow's Eve," so called as it is the day before All Saints day (observed by some Christians, including Roman Catholics), which used to be called "All Hallows," derived from All Hallowed Souls. In Ireland, the name was Hallow Eve and this name is still used by some older people. Halloween was formerly also sometimes called All Saints' Eve.

Something to thing about when you go and buy that plastic jack-o-lantern (sp?) this year. I am actually surprised more people don't know about the origin of halloween.

Halloween was originally the celtic "celebration" of death, it is when the world of the dead and the living come together the closest and your dead loved ones come to dinner (they actually set table for everyone that was dead too) and the dead folk taht can't find home walk around and food was left for them on crossroads so even they could feed

also raisings were done at halloween :)
