"Find the River" by R.E.M

In theory its quite upbeat and optimistic, but the entire mood of the song depresses me everytime.

If you like depressing music, go for Radiohead. Theres not many songs by them that aren't depressing, but some of the best are "Street Spirit", "Creep", "Black Star".

If you've never heard a depressing song, how would you know it depresses you?

Even more than Clocks by Coldplay, Speed of Sound by the same band (which has many similar elements) is more depressing. Once or twice in a row is about all I can stand.

I would also have to say that Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins tops the charts for me in terms of its depressing effects.

But other than that ...

Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
Puff the Magic Dragon (great song, but depressing nonetheless)

Also, the soundtracks to Forrest Gump and Cast Away by Alan Silvestri are quite depressing (but are works of art).

Although, overall, I'm a punk rock and alternative rock kind of guy. I do like virtually all kinds of music, except country and (c)rap(e), of course. :P

Suicide is Painless - The theme tune to M*A*S*H

Can't get too much more depressing than that song.

Sinead O Connor Nothing Compares to you.

If you have just broke up with someone don't listen to it or you will end up jumping off your local bridge.
