JanTaxi, I can say that it's nice to see innovation like that. I bet you had some nice press coverage :)

To learn how... and it grew from there. I'm fairly new on the website scene but have been coding for over a decade (I started with games on the Vic-20 and commodore 64 if anyone remembers those, lol). It was just time.

Now i'm working on my style skills in prep for phpbb 3... and in my spare time I help others and design for them. Maybe someday i'll turn pro... but for now i'm finding theres always something more to learn. Its a great hobby and it pays for itself.

Styles interest me most right now. Figuring out how things work is fun.
My Stuff: AtvStyle.com (5 forums in one) | dogonit style (adsense friendly)
My areas of interest: Custom Forums, W3C Validation, Forum SEO and other fun things people rarely notice.

Why did I start my own forum? Because I had yet to find another that served the purpose that I hope to serve with mine. We are only a month old.... I wish we were huge and growing daily already, but I am sure it will come with time since most, if not all of my advertising has been through WOM, emailing lots of people and slowly paddling my way through websites, signing guestbooks, etc.

I started mine to go along with my site about a specific version of the Mac OS, which would be Mac OS 7, that I felt particularly under-served on the internet.

It is working out pretty well since I didn't expect much, with 224 registered members and 1,499 posts as of this writing. I wish, in the last 8 months since I started it, there had been more activity levels now than there are.

Hackers are not criminals. Hackers are the only people out there to keep crackers and virus coders on the run. Hackers are misconstrued by the media, but in reality, they do not cause damage or steal. Hackers tell system administrators of the faults of their software, and keep the Internet safe from those who don't.

A freind and I were bored one day.....as a joke we decided to make our own "Free forum" In less than 5 days we had 36 members! Then the 6 or 7th day the "Free Forums" ads changed for the worse.....big banners, and pop-ups. I had it up for less than 2 weeks and had 45 members. I didn't want our members to experiance ads or drive them away so I set up our own server with PHPBB2 and coppermine.

I started a forum because...
  • I wanted to focus on the emotional problems with weight loss rather than just nutrition
A place where people who take my classes or read my books can chat
Increase profile for me and my books
Still pretty new and slow to take off. Need lots more users :) posting regularly

I started one for just general discussion (I call it chat, but it is discussion, need to change forum name), and polls.

Sadly, although i have read many sucess stories on how to start a forum, I have only seven members. Two were Spammers, two abandon accounts, one real user, one admin (me).

Anyone know what i did wrong, unlike many others who posted in this article who have 100's and 1000's of members?

(My forum link is in my Sig if someone wants to see it)
