99 out of 100 forums go no where?? Are you kidding me? I've seen plenty of successful forums in my time and the administrators of those boards don't sit on their rear ends doing nothing, thank you very much. Look at Forum Promotion, look at The Admin Central (or whatever that one site's called...) They didn't get successful by sitting around doing nothing with their forums. They constantly updated their boards, they constantly promoted everywhere they could, they constantly added content. Now if that's not success, I don't know what is.

They just got lucky with their domain. Obviously if you type "forum promotion" on Google they will come up.

But the new owner of that site is clueless. The old owner didn't have time to he passed it on...

Hello,

I am not an expert. But I will like to share my experience with SEO.

I followed many topics in this forum and they really worked well with me. I have very few backlinks
main changes which really contributed to my rankings are:

I changed Page titles as in http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic ... 84&t=32742
I added {PAGE_TITLE} in meta tags, both keywords and description. It works great
I added a Keyword box below ever topic with {PAGE_TITLE} in it.

these are basic steps which any novice like me can follow. Obviously, besides these content is the king.t

Please point out if there is any mistake
Regards

Offer promises of a party and cake. When users leave, ask them to get into the party position by laying flat on the ground with their arms to their sides. Should they rebel against you, sing a song.

The forum has to be uniquely valuable to a target audience.

In general, you want to optimize your site for search engines, spread the word, build some hype, and spend a little money on advertising. That's common knowledge.

However, if you discover an MMO without a fan forum and you create its first fan forum, the odds your community will be successful are much greater than if you create a promotion forum. There's only so much room for individuality in a promotion forum. There's not much you can do to be unique and overcome your competitors. Your forum will have less value. On the other hand, an MMORPG's first fan forum will have tremendous value. You would have created a game's first utility for discussion, and provided you employ the aforementioned common methods of promotion, the odds your forum will be successful are high.

The same logic, of course, applies for the first promotion forums - they were all relatively successful - and also for Call of Duty fan forums that are founded today - they all fail because 200 Call of Duty communities already exist.

Forums with genuine value often meet success.

I have a month old science forum and it has decent activity now i guess. I guess it all depends on activity on the forum. People join where there is activity and and topics that deliver something useful.

Well as a member of a lot of forums for alot of years I can tell you one thing that fastest way to lose members is to censor people and violate there freedom of speech which seem just about all forums do any more as well has having stuck up and hateful moderators!

Advertising to your target userbase. If it's a gaming forum, post it in other gaming forums. If it's about music, go to some music groups. It's all about networking.

Wow - this is a long thread!!

The simplest way is to build a large and popular website and devote your energies to that. The forum will become an extension. At some point you'll start to think of it as the hub, but it didn't start that way and never could. Build the pyramid and a small percentage will become regular contributors on your forum.

You have to learn to run it too; that's the fun part!

Cheers, Paul

actually there are many, many sites that are just the board and they do very well.

it just depends on the subject matter and the members etc.
