Guess there is no easy way out , one needs just to endure and keep the board online (working as it should), there are no shortcuts, no blackhats will work out in the long run ... just wait until the competition will drop out or until your unique contents will be spoted.

if you are serious then be proactive.

find other boards with the same or similar subjects. become a member, put your board in your sig file.
make good relevant posts, get involved but don't spam.

do the same with blogs.

write a few articles and post them to the top article directories.

get involved here at phpbb.com, ask/answer questions. make sure your board is in your sig file here.
it will be in google within minutes.

One trick is to get backlinks, quality backlinks, use anchor keywords for your url in your sig file.

for instance, if your site is about gaming, use something like this in your sig file:

Code: Select all

Gamers is the best [url=http://example.com} gaming site[/url] in the world.
which will produce this:
Gamers is the best gaming site in the world.

then, make sure you have lots of current relevant information about those keywords on your board.

if you just sit back and wait, it will take forever. get out and promote your site.

I am running a D.I.Y forum - any advice ? I do get some users but not enough. I had to send emails asking people to use the forum.

Most people don't want to be the first to register. You have to create several phantom users and make several post from each. The you have to get on the search engines. You can register your site with them, follow the instructions on their site and go on discussion boards and blogs and mention your board in your post. Dont just advertise it . Discussit so people will be curios and want to see what it' all about.

Good Luck

You've got to start somewhere, My friend and I started a discussion on a popular forum. It got huge so we used much of it's content to create our own forum and now many users post in both!

Post exchanges are good.
They get your forum looking more active for when other people visit it.

Sorry! I can't stand post exchanges they are so contrived and once they're done, the person doesn't tend to hang around.

I do links on facebook, link exchanges in forums I don't mind doing, sigs in forums. I've done business cards but I don't think i've got many if any members from those. The best is word of mouth, ask your existing members to invite people.

Have to agree with all those pointing out the importance of having something to offer that interests people...

It's like in the early days when everybody wanted a homepage, usually some accounts came with the ISP, and put up pictures of their cats, added silly looking counters, and whatnot - only to realize not a single person was interested visiting but themselves...

I started my forum late February/beginning of March this year, and focus on my own graphics work for TTDLX, (Transport Tycoon Deluxe). I haven't done any serious promotion yet, but currently there are 123 members registered, and I suppose that's good... 8-)

People will join in and participate in a forum if there's a need or want for it. :D Also, it helps to personally know a lot of people with related interests.

Well, there are a lot of ways to get users... for example, posting in anothers forums with the same content, inviting my friends (they can be very useful to start!!), publishing my forum in social networks, creating lots of useful posts, being respectful with user's opinion...
