They must feel at our site like in home!
I disagree completely with that concept. Now obviously, since this is a forum to discuss forum software, this presupposes the website I create would be a forum. If I spend my time and my money in order to create a website/forum, I would want the website/forum to reflect the ideals that I feel are important and not what others think it should be. If others want to create a website/forum, they have every right to do so and they can set it up and run it any way they choose. But as for myself, I would want my website/forum to be what I want it to be. So if I want it made clear there will be no foul language or pornography posted on the forum, I would post that as one of the main rules. If someone doesn't like that rule, they can leave the site and go elsewhere.
The only time that I believe having a website/forum catered specifically for others would be a good idea, is if it is a paid site. If a paid site is what you have, then by all means, you definitely need to cater specifically to the users because the users are who is paying the bills and making you money. So by all means, do what you need to do to keep the paid members coming back. If that means bending over and kissing their foot, then I guess maybe you will have to do it.
But for most people who have a website/forum, it is not a paid site and the admin is under no obligation to cater to anybody. So to my way of thinking, as long as the website has material/content that is appealing to a large number of people, the website/forum will have a sizable following. In my opinion, CONTENT is the real ticket to getting new members and keeping them, not catering to the whims of others. If a member has a good idea, you may want to implement it, but only if you feel it really IS a good idea and something you would like to do for your forum. But the real key to success is content and as long as you have content that people want and enjoy, they will be back and they will bring their friends with them.
Now obviously, you need to make the site as user friendly as possible. But doing that doesn't mean you have to do whatever a few of the members want. It's your site, set it up and run it the way you want it to be run. I mean, look at your forum like it's your home. In our case, the wife and I don't smoke and because of that we have a rule, we don't allow smoking in our home. If you are a guest in our home, we expect you to NOT smoke in our home. If you wish to smoke, go outside and smoke. As long as you follow the rules, you are more than welcome to come visit us. If you refuse to follow the rules, we will ask you to leave. By the same token, your forum has rules. These are the rules you want followed. Member can stay as long as they follow the rules. If they refuse to do so, ask them to leave. You don't have to cater to their every whim. It's your forum, you created it and you are paying for it. Therefore, you have every right to run it the way you feel is best.
Anyway, that is my opinion for what it is worth. You may agree with me, or you may disagree, but in any case I don't want to start a big debate about it. An opinion is what it is, an opinion.
