Sony has annouced the new ps3
E3 2006: PS3 Price, Controller, and Launch Date Announced
Breaking news from Sony at E3.
by Gerry Block

May 8, 2006 - Sony's major E3 conference just wrapped up, and the hardware news was quite big. Sony will release the Playstation 3 in America on November 17. $499 will purchase the unit with a 20 GB hard drive, while $599 will buy the system with a 60 GB hard drive.

Sony plans to have 2 million units ready to ship at launch, 2 million more before the end of 2006, and an additional 2 million units by the end of March 2007.

The official PS3 controller was also officially debuted. Similar in all external respects to the PS2 Dual-Shock, the PS3 controller will also incorporate a 6-degree tilt-sensitive feature.

Sony also showed a quick demo of the PS3's EyeToy. Demonstrated by means of a card battling game, the camera was able to recognize specific cards placed upon a table, which spawned monsters upon a battlefield in-game, and could track the movement of the cards in real time.

They also showed the new controller. Looks like they went with the ps2 look.

As for me, Im looking forward to what M$ is coming back with. I hope to see a halo 3 trailer.

Sony just dug their own grave in the video game business. Not too many people can afford a system at those prices. I also heard the $600 one is going to have wifi included and the $500 one isn't.

I'm more interested in this: Wii Controlling Twilight Princess.

I've been looking to this for a while now and after seeing the videos for it, the controller looks to be well suited for this type of action.

As for the PS3, not sure about it. I've got enough consoles as it is and I just dropped almost $700 on an XBOX 360 (plus accessories) recently, so I'd like to save up for something else before hand.

Good point. The only way I'd possibly get one is if it's ~$400 NZ, and I'm guessing it'd cost sony that much to make it. What ever happened to KISS? :?

I only wanted a PS3 for one game also. But that game won't be coming out for at least 2 years+

With a hard drive and other stuff, consoles are becoming more and more like PCs as time passes.

Maybe one day PCs will come with some sort of BIOS that simply boots a game from its DVD without using Windows or any other normal OS (the game itself *is* the OS), while if there's no DVD in the drive at bootup, it will go to Windows like normal. Of course the game-OS will automatically support USB joysticks/gamepads. :)

heh, but looking at the ps3, i'd say its more powerful than most Desktop PC's some people have at their homes. I know im buying one, maybe not as soon as it comes out, as it usually drops 100 bucks or more within the first few months, maybe ill wait a year.

I liked the trailer of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I can't wait to play as Meta Knight. I'm surprised they put in Snake though.

I'm not all that suprised by it. MGS on the GameCube was supurb. And there were rumors floating around prior to SSBM being released that the developers for MGS wanted Snake in that version.
I stress rumors though since I'm yet to find any solid evidence to support that kind of claim.

PS3 sure has a hefty price tag... I just hope they have the supply to handle the demand on release.

My thoughts:

Sony:
1. PS3 price tag. Sony is stupid, really stupid and this is coming from a big Sony PS fan. The price is simply outrageous for a gaming system and that bank busting price tag will scare everyone except a few hard core gamers off. Instead of talking about the new features, everyone is wondering how they could afford $600 for it.

But we're all wrong. Really though, the PS3 is too cheap!

2. PS3 missing features. Not only does the $500 (let that sink in) PS3 only have a whimpy 20gig hard drive, it doesn't have the memory card readers, Wifi, and the HDMI interface which is needed for those Blueray movies. So you will be SOL when Blue-ray movies come out with the content protection. Read more.

3. Why doesn't the controller have the rumble feature any more? I liked that and it will be missed.

4. There's a rumour that Sony will prevent used games from being run! Who knows if Sony will do this or not. It's not like they have a great track record of being friendly to consumers. Remember the rootkit fiasco anyone?

IMHO, Microsoft has lost the "evil" badge and Sony is the proud new owner. Sony will likely screw consumers with the new PS3 and I know I won't be buying one!

Microsoft:
1. Halo 3. :) 'Nuff said.

2. Reasonably priced, cool Xbox 360 accessories.

3. HDDVD drive. Haven't see much on this but it doesn't seem like it will be too expensive so if you already have a 360 it will be great to have HDDVD capability.

Since the 360 is already out, Microsoft didn't have anything too earth shattering, but they did release some great new stuff.

Nintendo Wii:
I'm not a big Nintendo guy but I sure like the Wii's motion sensing controller! You can even play golf or tennis with it. Maybe the holodecks and holosuites will be coming soon! :P Hey, I can dream can't I?
