Discussion: OSUOSL.org's Rackathon 2006!

Post by JimpsEd » Wed Aug 09, 2006 11:53 am

Why does phpBB turn down donations from individuals, asking instead that they donate to OSUOSL.org, who support organisations like Mozilla and OpenOffice, who have plenty of support already?

It seems phpBB is missing out!

Because it affords them total flexibility. If you start allowing people to donate money and equipment then they'll expect you to work on a fixed timeline. That isn't the way phpBB development is done.

We don't accept donations because a) we do not believe that they would be beneficial to the project because of people demanding things and return for a donation and b) we can cover the costs that we have (ie buying the server this site runs on, buying software we need to support phpBB etc) from the adverts at the bottom of the page

However donations to OSL benefit us since they provide hosting and services to us and also to other OSS projects which we use. If you take a look at the list of hosted projects, you will see several that provide software or services that we use - eg Apache, PHP, Freenode, Debian, etc

The majority of donations would likely be small ones like $1, $2, $5, etc. anyway.

Yes but if everyone puts 1-2-5$ that would make allot. This community is not only based on 100 members but 100 000 members. Probable not all registerd on this forum.

At least phpBB is truly free, there would be no guilt or pity to push someone to make a donation.

Possibly a good move in the long run. :)

Exactly. No nagging feelings about contributions for anybody.

I do appreciate SHS` drawing our attention to this opportunity to contribute to OSUOSL.org though. It provides an outlet for those who want to make a financial contribution to open source software in general and because of phpBB in particular. Everybody wins :D .

Could you imagine 100,000 demanding donors of $2 running around? That's why.

Remember though that there are other ways to support the project. For example buying products from our cafepress store. The group gets a little bit of money from it, and you get a snazzy tshirt/cap/mug/whatever 8)
