Registered or Non Registered

Post by ABA Boxing »

Do you make your forums open to the public or make people Register to view topics?

Do you find more people will join your forum if it is viewable to Registered people only, or that people are to lazy to sign up so dont bother with the forum?

I have mine set to Registered, but am not sure if people are being turned away because they cant be bothered to sign up.

If i open the forums to public viewing the post views go up alot, but the people read then go away and the member count remains low.

I've tried it both ways, guest viewing does allow more traffic and interest however like you said most will just remain a guest lurker and never register or participate. If you set it for registered you will see a spike in registrations but your user activity will remain the same because alot of the new registrants only registered to "have a look" and once they have snooped around they move on.

I think it all depends on what content you have in the forums and if you are going for a large number of users vs. large number of participating users.

I think i will try it open to public for a month to see what happens, i would still be interested to see what other forum admins find the best.

Thanks

I personally always choose public... unless it needs to be private.

I always find interesting post from search engines... then join them.

Thats not possible unless they are open and indexed by search engines?

Correct? :?

I've always had my forums open to the public to read. However, now I'm using vBulletin (just until Olympus gets released) and it is modded to only allow guests to view XX number of threads or XX posts in a thread before the forum forces the guest to register. Of course, search enginee bots get to bypass the limit on posts and threads to read .

Personally I like to set the forums at read everything and register to post.
That way potential members get to see whats on offer before they join.
A few "register to see anything" forums have been associated with illegal contant so even if they havent I tend to stay away from that. :)

I let unregistered members view my board, but to actually post, they need to register.

I've kept my forums at register to post, but guests can view.. Why?

Because, in my opinion, if I have to register to view anything, Why should I bother registering, if I don't know the content that I'm registering for?

I leave mine viewable by non-members. Google will be able to index all my threads and posts. So people can easily find my forum on Google.

My (little) phpbb2 board is readable and writeable by non-registered users. Registered users just have some more functions at their disposal.
I've dealt with spam adding a sort of very simple but personalized "captcha" (unregistered users have to digit a number they're shown).
That's because we want it to be a space of discussion open to everyone. We're not an elitarian community or a group focused on something in particoular. So, first you check if you like it, then if you plan to come back you register. I like Wikipedia style, so to say.
Then, it turns out that the ones who visit often also register.
Whatever I say, it's not my fault.
