open source software, does phpBB get paid or earn $$??

Hi,

I 'm REALLY impressed by the latest release of phpbb!

For all this hard work, does anyone get paid at all? i.e. is there other services that they charge for?

Well... they sell clothing.

I also imagine that they get paid a pretty penny for the ads on the site.

phpBB returns no profit. The clothing is sold at no gain, and the ads just go towards the server. All of the team members and the rest of us users are just volunteers who help just because we enjoy it, nothing more.

I thought the hosting was donated. Do the ads really return $0? I would have thought they would return hundreds every month, far more than enough to pay even the greediest host.

They return money, but webservers aren't free. The hosting is donated, but the servers are far from.

Why do people keep forgetting that servers cost money? Yes, money garnered each month goes in to various costs, such as a fund to pay for servers. Our current servers are already paid for, but that doesn't mean things won't happen and parts or entire servers won't need replacing.

And just because the hosting is donated don't forget that the phpBB group can opt to donate funds back to the OSUOSL, just like you can.

What is the big deal if the DO make a profit, I mean it isn't against the law to turn a profit!

There is ALLOT of work behind the scences to keep the lights on!

Usually free hosting doesn't require you to pay for a server.. That wouldn't exactly make it free.. But what do I know. I suppose you could be paying them. I did notice on OSUOSL's site that they mentioned that the hosting is not always free.

If you're implying that I said it was a bad thing for them to profit from it, then you are incorrect to make such an implication. I was only trying to point out that it is quite possible that they are making a decent profit from it.

..They must donate alot of money to OSUOSL

It's called co-location.

You buy a server, and host it on a rack somewhere. That's not a unique concept, plenty of commercial hosting companies offer the service. By doing that you are no longer renting the server + paying for bandwidth, you're simply paying for bandwidth. Or in the case of phpbb.com, not.

There are topics in the Announcements forum that discuss the hardware purchase.

They're not in business, the project is completely ran by volunteers.
