This could not be done for individual posts because it flips the entire page, not just a portion of it.

For posts, use in your CSS instead of the body tag.
It should be noted that the code that Dave posted in this topic (last year) was for a phpBB2 board, it's slightly different now for phpBB3, i.e. you would not use $board_config or $HTTP_SERVER_VARS, both will not work.
