Looking for recommendations for a new hosting site

Post by JimWalton » Sun Jun 16, 2019 6:18 pm

I've been with GoDaddy for 10 years and looking for something better. My website just uses WordPress and phpBB. (I also link into Simplecast and YouTube from Wordpress. I have a bunch of plug-ins, but that's all through WordPress) Nothing else.

Cheap would be nice. It's for my non-profit, so not a lot of money to work with.

Better than GoDaddy would be nice. I'm on CPanel with GoDaddy.

I'm also not a computer wiz. I know some stuff, but not tons.

A friend recommended Hostgator or Siteground, but then thought maybe there are friendly, knowledgeable people on the phpBB discussion forum to guide me to a new hosting site.

What I'm looking for:

1. I would have to migrate all my email from GoDaddy (one account).
2. phpBB relocation
3. WordPress relocation.
4. backups (continual or nightly)
5. SSL security (firewalls, spam protection, virus protection)

Any suggestions for me?

These topics just turn in to spamfests where everyone names the host they already have so, we cannot really recommend a host, but we do recommend that you visit WebHostingTalk.

Most of the big names will get mentioned and you'll find some people who love and hate them in equal measure!

I'm on Hostgator. Using the Zed Attack proxy, theres a few things that should be locked down on the server for security reasons but arent..
speed out of the box was pretty slow, and took a bit of tweaking of the Web.config file to speed things up.

also they want you to pay an upgrade fee for wordpress in order to change the little tab Icon from that annoying gator.
Had to figure out what was needed as far as files to do it manually (They don't offer the info in order to force you into upgrading Wordpress)

Sure they have some "Quick Installs" (Outdated PHPBB)...
and the initial price is low, but their main focus is to get you to buy better services.

Been thinking about trying out Bluehost when it's time for renewal..
I'm pretty new at it too, and have to dig around on the interwebx to figure things out

Stay away from Hostgator. You may be interested in Geek Storage or Geek Ghost. Check them out at webhostingtalk.com

As KevC said, a site like WebHostingTalk should help you in your quest for hosting.
