phpBB3 seo - link move error in google

Post by Acemprol » Thu Sep 04, 2008 6:37 am

phpBB3, if you to move a topic you lose link in google

Its topic has pagerank 2

You move the topic for another one forum

Its topic pagerank 2 already was

You are with link duplicate in google

e its new topic is with pagerank 0

If you did not understand you made a video showing as

Video link:

Video phpBB3 move Error

would be to take off id f= of the topics

exemplo:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=50
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=50

=

viewtopic.php?t=50 = no links duplicates in move topic

This and other concerns has been discussed in some quite lengthy topics many times, I'd suggest doing a search for SEO on this forum as many of the team members including the developers have posted in them.

There are SEO mods available, check the modifications forum.

As was pointed out, this has been discussed quite often. Search for one of the many SEO topics here -- the general conclusion is there's nothing wrong with how things are being handled.

That link has a purpose... it's to allow people who are viewing the topic to show up in the "who's online" area under the proper forum.

Yes, you can do that, but it does have a purpose. :) It's not like it's there for no reason...

I wouldn't normally expect this to be an issue, as the general pagerank will be more important than a topic's.

I admit that the forum id in the viewtopic link is suboptimal for non-global topics. I don't think that phpBB3.0 will change that, but as a quick measure it should be enough to send a 301 redirect if the submitted forum_id is incorrect.
The thing is that having the f in the url makes online tracking and global topics a lot easier and faster. Not using the f parameter adds an update query to almost all pageviews.

I was looking at the forums invision, vbulletin & simplemachines and has only 1 id topic, for me it avoids many duplicate links to move forums

I don't know how often you move topics that are relevantly linked from the outside. I would not expect it to have a significant impact, as google is quite able to figure changing GET parameters out.

for example: a person called a topic in a wrong forum, google indexes the topic with an id forum, then we change the topic of forum, conclusion: duplicate links

As a matter of my own personal opinion, I can't see it being that big of a problem. For one thing, what percentage of your topics get moved? For a second, what percentage of moved topics were previously indexed by google?

As you've already said you have removed the f=xx from your URLs and that's fine for you. As I stated, there is a reason why it's there, and therefore you have broken one thing while attempting to fix another. :)

Also, I'm quite sure Google et al know that bulletin boards are quite fluid and probably take that in to consideration.
