Topic title length and post character max

Post by PatPeter » Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:46 am

Did anyone else notice that in phpBB2, you could change the maximum allowed characters in a topic's title, but you could not change the post's character maximum?

Now in phpBB3, you can change the post's character maximum, but not the topic's title maximum.

in phpbb2, you could change the max characters allowed for any field in the database. the limit depends on the field type and the database you are using.

the max I believe for mysql is somewhere around 64,000 characters.

I have no idea about what is available in phpbb3 but I would assume it to be the same or better.

As long as the HTML limit for subject entry and the DB match.

What I HATE is that you can type some nice long descriptive subject and then have it truncated in mid-word. That might only have been a phpBB2 problem.

Code: Select all

<input name="subject" id="subject" size="45" maxlength="64" tabindex="2" value="Re: Topic title length and post character max" class="inputbox autowidth" type="text">
That code snippet is what generates the subject line in the reply box I'm typing in right now (phpBB3)

This next line of code is from the "new topic" subject line.

Code: Select all

<input name="subject" id="subject" size="45" maxlength="60" tabindex="2" value="" class="inputbox autowidth" type="text">
Oh look - they are not the same!!

this suggestion would add (at least) one new SQL select, but why not generate that HTML dynamically from the board settings. It would at least resolve the difference between post/reply HTML generated....

Maximum length for new topics is 4 characters to take into account "Re: " being prepended to replies ;)

I never did understand the need for more characters in the subject or the title etc.

the post is where you type in all the text, subjects should not need to be very long, topic titles should not need to be very long.
