The one thing I like about phpBB2 better...

Post by OldRockSongs » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:13 pm

The one thing I like about phpBB2 better is... the way it looks. Sure, there's a phpBB subsilver skin, but it doesn't display the website link and everything on posts. And the prosilver skin sucks, avatars on the right?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean about website links, etc. not appearing. As for profiles being on the right in proSilver, this decision was made so that the focus is on the content, not the poster ;) You can, however, change it back -- see Knowledge Base - Prosilver: Profiles on Left.

And it's not that hard to create a phpBB2 subSilver style template - heck even mess around with subSilver 2 and you'd get it. It's all just HTML anyways :)

Just wait until you see phpBB 3's RAM usage compared to phpBB 2.

all website links appear in phpBB3 for me. There must be a problem with your style/template?

It's not exactly difficult to add the URL to viewtopic. It's a one line change to viewtopic_body.html. I question the necessity for such things to be displayed after every post anyway.

As for the poster information being on the right: it makes sense. It was extremely awkward for me at first, but that's the logical place to put it. For ltr languages, the focus is on the left, and that's where the content is now.

You make it sound like it's exponentially higher. There's no question about phpBB3 using more resources, but that's just because it's a whole other animal. Just the UTF-8 functions alone use a considerable amount of resources. If you use phpBB 1.x, it'll use even less memory. You can save even more by just removing your entire site.

phpBB3's memory usage is definitely "conservative". It's not a bloated package of features unceremoniously held together by tape, like some of these other solutions.

That took me about 2 weeks to get used to, I didn’t like the change at first, but found out later that it was just a change and the only reason I didn’t like it was actually because I was not used to it. :)

It is. In many cases, phpBB 3 uses twice as much RAM to generate a comparable page than in phpBB 2.

Where are these benchmarks?

That's ridiculous.

Before I (we) discount it, I want to see some benchmarks, I think that’s fair, don’t you?

EDIT: I just spent the last hour doing some basic benchmarks on phpBB2, I wanted to do some real load testing with 10,000 users, 100 online users, and 100,000 posts. However, I quickly found out why I ran away from phpBB2 when I did.
phpBB2 code does not hold a candle to phpBB3, not even close, a pain to work with and modify compared with phpBB3. As one user put it on IRC just a few minutes ago:
you're braver than I; phpBB2 gives me seizures :|
It’d take some time to put together a real load tester, without a previously written MOD, whereas I could do the same thing with phpBB3 in about 15 minutes.

The way it looks isn't a problem at all. Phpbb3 has both subsilver2 based templates and prosilver based templates. And I think that the subsilver2 based templates emulate the look of phpbb2 very well. So if you're really bothered about the looks, just use a subsilver2 based template.

Still no benchmarks? ... can you substantiate this claim?

I changed some things on the actual subSilver style, but I guess a more extensive job must be done to set some things straight (specially on the viewtopic). I miss the old subSilver template from phpBB 2. The fiSubice2 style (based on subSilver) is also my favorite these days.

P.S. The website thing was solved here: :)

phpBB 2 RAM Usage versus phpBB 3 RAM Usage.

Feel free to do these tests on your own as well....

Some basic stats:
GZip off, MySQL 5.0.67, PHP 5.2.4 on Apache 2.2.x
Mac OS 10.5 with 1 GB RAM and 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Default style, ie, subSilver for 2 and proSilver for 3.
