Hosting promoted by phpbb.com

Post by DoYouSpeakWak »

Hey everybody.

I was just looking at the hosting page at the topbar. Sadly there is no dedicated european or asian hosting there. That seems strange since phpbb are used all over the world. Could you update the page at some point ?

The problem is that its hard to talk hosting here since its not permittet per site basis. We really need a SSH host that loves there phpbb users. Sadly the hosting page was not much help. Talked to most of them and none of those i chattet with provided SSH on there shared packages.

Web hosts pay to be on that page, and no European or Asian hosts have done so.

The hosting page is just filled with ads, not sure if it was ever meant to be helpful. Take a look at Web Hosting Talk. :)

Thats very sad to hear. I only thought that real host that was tested and recommended by phpbb.com was in there. Should be that way. But i guess a site like this arn`t free to run. ;)

If you need web hosting suggestions, I'd suggest Web Hosting Talk or Web Hosting Jury.

ICDSoft has servers in USA, China and Germany but they don't provide SSH access.

Most shared hosting accounts don't have SSH. I had a shared hosting account at one time that allowed it but you had to fax them a drivers license. These accounts are typically used by people that may not even know what FTP is let alone SSH hence the reason they don't allow it.

The database can be uploaded a variety of ways such as using phpmyadmin, or in the case of really large databases you can FTP it to a directory and use bigdump.

Why do you need to know about "CVS"?
That's nothing to do with using released versions of phpBB.

I've never worked on a board where the host allow SSH access. I've always managed just fine with bigdump. I once even had to split the database up into smaller chunks in Notepad++ and restore it by hand.

Some hosts will import the SQL data for you. Just upload it all at once, tell them where it is and they will do it for you.

Normally shared hosting will not come with SSH access without proper verification because it is too risky (even jailed ssh) to provide this access to any shared user.

Your right. Bigdump worked fine. But also found a host with ssh and all the features needed. Took some time but it was worth it. Also got free ssl. :)
