2009 - The Year of Giving Back To phpBB (& others like it)!

Like most of America, I'm sure many of us are tight on cash about now. Due to the holiday or from the economic crunch, our pockets are a little lighter than normal.

That being said, I propose starting in January 2009, let's make an effort of financially supporting phpBB and other open-source projects. Every little-bit counts... whether you make a $1 or $10 donation, I'm certain it will be appreciated. As the Obama campaign proved, a lot of little donations equal one heck of a punch!

phpBB and other open-source projects have given us a lot free of charge. They deserve our financial support!

PS - Nobody from the phpBB Team had anything to do with me posting this topic.

It's a decision that we made a good long time ago, and we've stuck by it ever since. May times when donations are taken, users who donate expect some sort of favor in return, such as priority support. While the majority of donors certainly wouldn't take this stance, it can happen.

Secondly, and the main reason really, is we simply don't want the donations. Every team member is here on a voluntary basis, server and maintenance costs, as well as events (such as Londonvasion) are covered by advertising revenue. Team members really don't see any of that money in their direction, and phpBB as a project is better off because of it.

Are you suggesting that only America is tight on cash?

People can help phpBB by installing the software (so others will want to use it) and helping out in the forums. I guess that's all phpBB needs. I know I'm not too helpful compared to others, but I try...

Every small query answered, allows a support or more experienced member to answer a harder question by someone else. So don't belittle what help you can give.

So, yes, helping others in the support/MOD/Style forums is the best way of helping us.

How will donations to the hosting company indirectly help phpbb.com? Well, I guess since they donate the server space etc. , then donations might help them recover those costs.

Yes. Also with updating their equipment/facilities to provide a better up time or allow room for us to put more servers in there. Donating to them will also indirectly support other open source projects that they host.
