OSCONvasion 2009 Preliminary Wrap-Up

Post by webmacster87 »

Thanks to the folks who tuned in on the TalkShoe audio stream and the Ustream video stream! Despite the small audience, we had a great time, and it was personally great to meet the other team members.

The audio recording of OSCONvasion will be released later tonight as phpBB Weekly #115. A HD video recording (which is different than the Ustream version) will be released next week once AdamR edits and publishes it. A number of us have taken photos and will be publishing them on Flickr with the tag "osconvasion".

OSCONvasion was the first phpBB meetup ever in North America, and is probably the largest-scale phpBB meetup since Londonvasion. I hope that this will serve as a precedent to help invigorate even bigger, better, and more-well-attended local phpBB events. In particular, as OSCON is one of the biggest events put on for open source projects, we all agreed that we want to see phpBB have a bigger presence at OSCON going forward. Maybe we could even get our own booth...

This topic will continue to be updated as we get media from OSCONvasion online, so we do promise that if you keep your eye here you won't miss anything. (The first post will also be updated with links to audio/video/photos/etc. later on.)

Finally, OSCONvasion may be over, but our time here at OSCON in San Jose isn't! A few of us will be meeting here tomorrow morning to either do some sightseeing/touring or else just have some group discussion (to be decided tomorrow). After all, we're here to have a good time, right? ;)

Overall, OSCON has been a great success, and perhaps we will be able to have more OSCONvasions in the future. If we do, they'll certainly be more thoroughly planned, advertised well in advance, and we're hopeful that we can get even more of the community out to support us.

Here are some OSCONvasion photo sets that have been posted so far, and I'm sure that there's more on the way.

You can certainly tell from the pics that Bertie had a great time at OSCONvasion! ;)

I just tried it in VLC and while the video played, I got no audio. Here's the message:

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmap". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

For mac users, use QuickTime to run it. You'll have to install flip4mac in order to open the .wmv in QuickTime though.

Room  Don't think you can find one big enough.... Think you need something like a conference hall... something like (for the dutch a well known place) the RAI.. But then you might still havent enough room :P

Hmm. Apparently encoding H.264 at low bitrates doesn't work too well, which means two things: 1) I have to re-encode the H.264 version and 2) It's going to be a much larger file. ;)

I'll update my post above when it's complete.

A perfect demonstration of why I work with audio podcasts, not video podcasts. ;)

Well, that was fun. H.264 encoding failed about 9 times using 3 different encoders. I'm still scratching my head as to why. Vimeo failed miserably converting the video as well.

AND I finally got it working on blip.tv:
http://blip.tv/file/2443964

Enjoy :)
