Yes - I live in Washington DC - and am interested in know more about what your plans are. Have you found a meetup place yet?

Also, if there are folks traveling from NY/ Philly areas you may want to check out the cheap $15 bus fare to Washington DC.

I live about 15 minutes from DC, but the thing is, I'm not sure if I'll be able to plan for it it this far in advance. School often schedules things that I'm not allowed to say no to.

Maybe once I'm off to college I'll have more free time to do such things.
Don't forget to smile today. :)

You guys let me know where and it's a "firm meeting" and I'll buy the first round of your favorite beverage. May not be able to make it, but I'll still buy. ;)

I'll go! It's quite a drive from NC, but nothing a couchsurfing.org account can't fix :)

Awesome! Updated the first topic attendee list.

I know it's still early for a lot of people to know for certain, but announcing (partial) details early is the best way for people to hear about this early enough to mark their calendars.

A definite meetup schedule/location will be finalized and posted by February. And if you guys don't start posting some suggestions, I'm gonna have to decide for you. ;)

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing...

Being from DC, I can tell you what is worth visiting.

US Capitol - has the star which marks the center of DC, pretty cool, great architecture
Newseum - you need 2 hrs here, a unique experience
National Museum of Natural History
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
National Museum of American History

Ray's Hell Burger - where Obama ate burgers that made national news
Busboy and Poets (Shirlington) - cheap eats, great food, and unique apple pie - 5 mins from 14th street bridge

I can recommend nightspots too. This city has lots of good looking people.

Haven't been to the two national museums yet, but have been to the other three. The Newseum is awesome. (But isn't free to visit.)

I'm also a big fan of Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street--very historic and insanely delicious. Haven't gotten to try the Ray's Hell Burger place yet but will give it a shot this month.

If you've got any other suggestions, please don't hesitate to share! Being relatively new to DC myself I'm always looking for new places to check out. :D

I'm 4 hours away, so depending on who else is available to attend, I will strongly consider joining you for the fun.

Ha, if Fountain of Apples is attending American, then I live only a couple minutes away from there.

Unless you got some awesome planning, I wouldn't suggest the Capitol Visitors center. The lines to get into there are often excruciatingly long. In my experience, the best tour to give visitors is to just go to the National Mall and do whatever strikes everyone's fancy.

@Marshalrusty: Awesome, Yuriy! Looking forward to hopefully seeing you here!

@nicaldwell: Thanks for the tip. I haven't yet been to the Capitol Visitor Center (planning to hit it up sometime this semester) but we definitely don't want to spend all day waiting in long lines.

I just got back to American tonight from my Winter Break, so it's nice to know I'm not the only phpBB guy in the District. Hope to see you at the meetup.

Okay, last chance to share any suggestions for this meetup. I will be finalizing the plans this week and will announce the details on Saturday in order to give everyone a good six-weeks of a heads-up. :)

Besides the metro rides, it doesn't seem like there will be much time for actual "meet" stuff.

In any case, I'll still probably be there.

Well the main "meet" is hopefully going to be lunch, which has been given an ample amount of time for talking with each other. But the organization of this is designed as an informal opportunity to get together and have some fun as a group.

It's also worth noting that in pretty much every part of the agenda I have added more time than is particularly necessary to do things, so that there will be a lot of flex time in the schedule.
