The SERP already displays the page title. I would use {SITE_DESCRIPTION} in the meta description for the index page instead of page title.

That is pretty much what I put, I just manually types out something instead of using the variable.

I don't think any of the phpbb pages on my forum are being indexed by Google or any search engine. Do I need to install an SEO mod to make this possible? Can anyone suggest one specifically?

Thanks

No, the pages should be indexed no problem without any mods. Check the permissions set for the bots group.

Here's one good reason to use appropriate META tags:

I run Google Adsense banners on my site. Without the META keyword and description tags present, Google doesn't do a very good job of serving ads that match the subject matter of my site. I keep getting stupid MMORPG and dating ads, among other stupidities (despite the fact that I explicitly removed those from the Adsense backend). With proper META keyword and description tags present, Google tends to serve ads which are more relevant to our subject matter, in this case, photography. This makes it more likely that my users will be presented with ads that pique their interest, and the chance of them clicking on those ads is much greater.

I've run many tests to confirm this, both in regards to the ads served and the likelihood that they'll get clicked. Having proper META tags present is definitely a huge benefit in this regard. With the tags present, our Adsense revenue more than doubles.

Hi all, how would i add the site description to this? I do have the standard {site_description} jobby, and i do also use meta tags, but i figure i may as well add the site description to this code for viewtopic.php. :)

Code: Select all
// Output the page
page_header($topic_data['topic_title'], true, $forum_id);

Don´t do that, it won´t be of any positive help, you don´t want to show a site description on a page with actual content.

Surely it will help if my site description is made up of good key words, which are also in my meta tags(keywords and description) ? :)

The reason i think it will is because my board name is:
Volksdevil
It has no real connection with the content of the board.

But my board description is:
Volkswagen audi forum.
Which IS what my board is all about, so surely having that description in the page title?

It would mean that the pages would display as:
TOPIC TITLE > VOLKSDEVIL > VOLKSWAGEN AUDI FORUM

I think that SEO is better, because the URL is better to read and the searching machines like Google find the pages it better.
