You can't. The only way to block someone by PC is using their IP address, but unfortunately that is indeed changeable, so the spammer can still access you board.

If you're talking about automated spambots, then read this for info to prevent them.

AFAIK, there is no phpBB version 3 of the cookie ban mod but I could be wrong.

Spam is just a side affect to any forum, but there are ways to curve it. Take a look at the topic that JimA posted, it is full of valuable information. Banning is not a viable way to stop spam entirely because you tend to get different spammers constantly.

Just hire more moderators. :) Otherwise you'll have to live with it.

Cookie ban wouldn't be much of a good way to go either because cleaning cookies is easier than changing an IP Address.

What's "best" is whatever works (and realize that it may only work for you). For a simple technique that has worked very well for me (only two spammers in months), check out required custom profile fields.

The problem with cookies is that they're so easy to clear (unless, maybe, they're "Flash cookies"). Unfortunately, that may be as good as you can do with something like phpBB.

On a client/server chat system that I used to work on, they used a ban system that would mark certain files on the user's PC with a special pattern to ban them. Obviously you don't want Web apps having that kind of control of a user's PC, so that wouldn't work. Also, even that system didn't work perfectly -- fools who were banned would actually reimage their PC to get unbanned.

I haven't seen one for phpBB3, but your best bet would be to ask for this in the MOD Request forum.

Thank you very much. I had no idea what the Custom Profile field even did, with your tutorial I now have a simple antispam setup that I can change as needed. I used a different question than the example, now to see how well it works.
