Large phpBB Site Examples

Post by cspielman »

As a part of my considering adopting phpBB, can anybody give sample URL's of phpBB sites that are "large", meaning lots of content, lots of users, high traffic, etc.

Thanks in advance. This is my first post...hopefully it's in the right place.

This board ;). An other one that comes to mind is bokt.nl which is huge. At big-board you'll find a complete list of big forums and the software they use

Let me point out that GaiaOnline (the top forum on the big-boards list) isn't really phpBB any more. It was originally based on phpBB2, but has been very heavily modified.

Right. That site really doesn't get maintained any more. The only thing that gets updated are the total post and user counters. The world's largest known phpBB site is bokt.nl

I'd always considered www.hbgames.org to be pretty big (550k) but compared to some of the above and bigboards, I'm astonished. I never knew gaia was phpbb - I think that's the biggest you're gonna find!

You're about 4 years too late for that.

They're shutting down Gaia; can't meet up with the costs. I got an email from their forum since I was subscribed!

Wow, that's rather surprising. The site I linked manages to cover hosting costs from google ads; I'd have thought a site Gaia-sized could easily get an advertising deal big enough to be fairly safe hosting-wise.

The problem with gaia is that that site requires a server farm that isn't cheap to run (you can't host this on some cheap host ;)).

That data is nearly 4 years or more out of date. Their setup is twice as big as that.

Don't believe everything you read. If that were the case, Gaia would be closed years ago.
