As always the day after the day before its done.

This feature freeze simply means that no new features will be added to the development branch for Ascraeus. This however doesn't mean that all accepted changes are already fully implemented, the devs will now work on finishing the feature set as posted in the blog post. After that we'll see the required alpha/beta/RC releases before the final product is released.

Does this signal the end of subSilver altogether or will there be a subSilver3 ?

My Forum users won't let me install other styles, they are traditionists and only use subSilver

I imagine someone will make a version suitable for 3.1.x

How can you drop Subsilver?
I tried changing from a subsilver style once before and it caused huge issues.
Is subsilver going to be exported to a prosilver based style and supported by the phpbb team?
Are you going to make the code edits needed for every version available?

SubSilver2 didn't look modern, and not many people used it. It was just a pain to support on the MOD authors behalf. As I said, I'm sure someone else will port it to 3.1.x

See this discussion for the reasons behind the SubSilver2 drop.

It won't be supported anymore so the devs won't provide update paths to it, if they did it wouldn't make sense to drop support for it ;).

subsilver is dead from our point of view. It will not be supported by the Development team in any form beyond phpBB 3.0.x.

I believe the term is "luddite". I participate at a forum which upgraded to phpBB 3 about a year ago and there was a big commotion about the new proSilver theme.

As far as I am aware the performance difference between proSilver and subsilver2 is negligible. There have been some anecdotal claims otherwise, but thus far I am not aware of anyone reproducing this difference in a controlled test to produce actual figures confirming this.

Actually I did last year after reading a post by drathbun making the same assertion that his benchmark tests showed subsilver performing better than prosilver. I had the same result using our benchmarking systems in the development lab at work. There was nothing anecdotal about my results. I also thought I remember the devs eventually acknowledging the problems with prosilver but that conversation may not have taken place in a public forum. ;)
