Spammer was able to unban *@yahoo.com on phpbb 2.0

Post by neonrider » Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:13 pm

I suspect one spammer was able to unban *@yahoo.com on our phpbb 2.0. Because I was blocking all yahoo.com emails with *@yahoo.com command, but today I noticed someone spammed electronics sales on our forum and registered with a yahoo.com address. When I went to check why *@yahoo.com did not work, it was gone from the email ban list. Is this possible and how were they able to do this? How to prevent this from happening again?
One thing I don't wanna do is to upgrade to phpbb 3.0, because I like the design and simplicity of the 2.0.

Thank you in advance!
phpbb version 2.0.21 (moded with CodeCrush Log System (v.0.4.1) and 3.0.4 installed with Fantastico de Luxe.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to upgrade to 3.0 in order to get support at this site.

Can you just tell me HONESTLY - can spammers do that on phpBB 2.0 (or was it a glitch) - if they CAN, I will then upgrade to 3.0.

It's not a known flaw.

Sorry for the stupid question - I know what a floor is in a building and I suspect a "floor' means something in a geek language, but please specify. Thank you.

Could this be?

1264 admin 69.xxx.xx.xxx 2010 Aug 12 11:03 Banned: (*@yahoo.com (I did this ban)
1265 admin 69.xxx.xx.xxx 2010 Aug 12 11:03 Unbanned: (49)
1259 admin 69.xxx.xx.xxx 2010 Aug 02 00:05 Unbanned: (161)

There are several unban admin-logs, which I do not recall (but is possible my memory fails) that I was unbanning anyone recently. Yet they all were made from my IP address. Could this be a hack?

Or perhaps I never banned *@yahoo.com and then forgot what I did, but usually banning free email providers one always bans first yahoo and google mails.

Wait... I found this in admin logs:

1211 admin 69.xxx.xx.xxx 2010 Jul 16 21:48 Banned: (@yahoo.com)

This ban was made by me. The above two unbans - not sure.

Note: all IP addresses above are the same.

Most likely you did some things you didn't want to do without being aware of it. ;)
