This one is still doing the rounds. I had the same email today from the above address. Not the smartest of moves, seeing as my site deals specifically with scams. One more to add to the list

Though we can make things a little more difficult for these pond life ;)

In the last few weeks I've had the following taken down, which is the script being used for these mails ..

96.8.120.99/~admin/cc/ccmail/admin.php
173.208.225.99/~admin/cc/ccmail/admin.php
198.144.180.153/~admin/cc/ccmail/admin.php

I think Google might have also now killed phpbbaid@gmail.com as I only get them from phpbbspprt840@gmail.com

Whilst they will probably just keep moving, it only takes a minute to forward the mails & headers to the originating network, please don't just delete them and give them an easy life.

phpbbspprt840@gmail.com predates phpbbaid@gmail.com and I have done everything within my power to get them shut down, including contacting several people at different departments at Google. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who works on GMail directly.

At the end of the day, it takes far less time for him to pop new instances up than for us to take them down, so this will never work in the long run.

You're going to have to tell us a bit more about what warning you're talking about

Would it work to put some kind of warning about this in the update notice or the installation procedure? Perhaps simply pointing to the announcement?

phpBB scammer's at it again

Post by Lianfyrr »

Just a heads-up to my fellow phpBB board admins. Over the past few days, I have been receiving emails claiming to be from "phpaid@gmail.com".
Dear customers,

Now, you can make your forum automatically detect whether you are accessing
it from a PC or mobile device and depending on that it diplay the mobile
compatible style that make it very easy and fast to surf the forum

We are happy to provide you with paid help in that part , just reply to
that email if you are interested

Thank you .
The e-mail headers trace back to epwork.com, a known scammer. See:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2111378
and
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2095435

The first link has a few warnings and suggestions for good developer hiring practices, too. Bottom line: Pay attention, and don't get scammed!

I've been getting that "mobile" one as well lately.
Very tempted to email them back telling them to "do one" They can't spell in english properly so they got no chance of me giving them admin access to my forums

You should never reply to spam emails. That just lets them know your account is a real and active one and they can hammer it or pass it on to other spammers.

The scam is still going on, however as I am new to this I wanted to ask how we can tell who are the legitimate people from phpBB that can be of assistance? Is there a list of approved teams? I have contacted a few in the past but they report that they are too busy to offer assistance.

We have a relatively large forum (http://cefresearch.ca/phpBB3) that we moved from the USA to Canada and upgraded to phpBB3 from phpBB2 in July 2012. We paid our service provider to do that work as none of the programs would work on our large database. If it was my personal site I would try the automatic upgrade process but I am concerned if I do it incorrectly I will destroy our system. The solution appears to me to have someone go through it with us the first time so we can thereafter do it ourselves.

Any ideas,

Richard

Some of the longer term members of the site with large post counts offer services in their sigs. There are several sites offering services and you should be able to search for results showing customer testimonials.

The problem with us having a list is that we then become responsible for verifying the work and services of those people and that's a huge job to check everyone and maintain that what they do is up to standard, especially when the work is as diverse as a simple installation taking 5 minutes or custom coding that can take weeks.

I know Marshalrusty did at one point have a list of people he personally knew were ok but I'm not sure how up to date it is.
