[Community] Tell us what to add to the banner over there ➚➚➚

Post by Marshalrusty » Mon May 30, 2011 2:49 am

We've added a new banner to some select forums on https://www.phpbb.com for "public service announcements". I am referring to this:

Unfortunately this sort of things takes a couple of skills that I simply do not possess. Luckily, this seems to be exactly the sort of thing the community can get involved with. We're looking to add some banners to useful portions of the site. If you can make one of the ones below or have a unique idea, please reply to this topic and attach an image. Good ones (multiple versions, in some cases) will make it into rotation.

Disclaimer: If you use any third party content in your banner, make sure you have the right to use it. If you do not specify a license, it will be assumed that you are the author and are releasing the rights to the image to phpBB Limited.

I have a few phpBB t-shirts here for anyone who puts in a particularly strong effort.

This is an idea from me.
Simple it is... but sometimes the simple is the good.

It's not quite what I suggested but close enough. :) Will some of these also go on the home page, too?

Another banner might point people to the Knowledge Base for FAQs (like how to update the logo, insert ads or create custom pages).

First you need to use an alt tag to produce valid xhtml.

I think the banner thing is a good idea.
Use it for the most important messages.

I have been looking for a place to comment about the use of the image of a can of Hormel meat product.

In other places dealing with unwanted commercial email they report an agreement between themselves, for example spamcop.net, and Hormel not to use Hormel's copyrighted images and name, SPAM, when referring to spam email. I suppose in the EU it may be different.

Excellent idea.

Some important links could be inserted, for example: The area51 to follow the discussion of the development of phpBB.

The KB, the users usually do not search before posting to the forum. :|

Awesome, but maybe a little too gruesome

The rest are all great suggestions, but we really do need someone to make the images :)

Marshalrusty,

Would you be willing to post a PSD with background and border that you are using? That would help keep the style all the same. (If you understand what I am saying)
Please note that I will not be porting any of my mods to phpBB 3.1. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

There's really no reason why style or border would need to be the same.
I appreciate gifts from my Amazon wishlist.

Here are some for "Get involved":

Not sure about the image, but it looked cool and could possibly be interpreted as meaning "Grab a tool and get involved, something something global" which is sort of what we'd want

Hooray for blue globes. I couldn't find any images that really shouted "hosting" to me, maybe I'll make them myself if none of these three will cut it

The background I based on the background gradient found in the banner. The font used is Gill Sans Light (I don't have Cocon or Helvetica Neue sadly; I would have preferred to use one of those for consistency). The images used are all ones that I found in /usr/share/icons/gnome or /usr/share/icons/default.kde4/ and are distributed under the GPL/LGPL which hopefully means they can be used for this purpose.

Thoughts? I'm using Inkscape with layers for each image/text combination so it's pretty easy to modify if anyone has suggestions.

Those are all great, dellsystem. For the Documentation ones, how about "Confused about phpBB? Start here."

Maybe something like "Try our Documentation" for the subtext would be better? It seems like it would be nice to directly indicate somewhere that the "advertisement" is directly pertaining to the documentation and not some misc. help resource or similar.
