Many forum attempts yet all fail. Any help?

Post by alexander7566 » Sat Apr 21, 2012 3:35 pm

I have through the years been with phpbb for many years. I have tried many different forums and come up with many different ideas. Yet they all seem to fail. I have seen many many successful forums that seemed like it wouldn't have any success.

I have recently started a new forum that seems like a good idea. But I am having trouble starting it up. I was wondering if there was anyone that could give me personal advice. I have googled searched much advice, but many things I have done and failed.

I was wondering if there was someone that could help me out and show me if there is anyway that i can improve my forum to draw people in. I am on google a few places, because i have a few people come from google (like one a week). Everyone else just comes to play games, but will never join.

Then i have people that actually view the registration page, but never registers.

One guy spent 31 mins trying to register, but somehow never could. He viewed the registration page 17 times.

But my main problem is getting people to want to visit, then join. I have tried posting a few things of content. But still nothing.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

My forum is at http://ItWontWork.Net.

Thanks in advance!

Big topic here on how to get members
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 6&t=362219

I suspect your problem will be that your site is way too general and those often don't work. You, as admin, can't hope to be able to answer questions on fixes for everything from software to cars to kettles (I would assume). And users are much more likely to go to specialist sites on those as a result of that. Also if you're hoping other users will be able to answer the questions, you have to attract expert users from a large number of specialist areas before you get everything covered, and people are more likely to join if they have a problem they want solved, not because they know how to fix things so again your expertise, that would make the site useful, is missing.

By the way, you have a typo in the cars and trucks description.

Thank you. I never was a good speller at all.

I have seen your forum and it is very specific, and it does seem VERY successful compared to mine. I have tried making specific sites to computers, since I am a technician, but it yet failed too. I have seen that forum and tried many of the ideas in it (at least most that i can get out of it), but as you can see, it did not work as of yet. I have had people I know attempt to post info on there and we talk back and forth on fixing it, to get content on there.

And most of these things I am able to fix. As a computer technician for multi-million $ simulators I have come familiar with MANY things. I just need to get people asking. I realize as a admin i cannot answer all questions because it would look bad, but that is why I have multiple accounts on there.

I have thought about making a Wiki like on your site and posting how to's and things but im not sure how well that would work.

On a side note.. You have helped me many times by answering other people questions and for that thanks!

How about finding a more specific subject for your forum ? your forum seems too general. Find a niche and be good in it. No one is a jack of all trades, believe me. Also try to find a better looking style; subsilver2 looks so 1999. Then tone down on the ads. people generally run off when there's more than 3.

Yeah i thought about toning down the ads at least till i get a few people on. Good advice.

I would change the theme but don't mods have trouble going on new themes? I have like 10 mods that i really use and like. I hate to get rid of those mods.

The sad part is i have had this forum for like 2 months (round about) and the only registered people that is on there is me and my wife and her uncle. (plus a couple people from others forums i have made - i just copy the forum and edit it to my new idea).

At first it was just going to be for computers, but i thought it would be fun to do it all, since i like working on just about anything. But maybe you guys are right.

But that's possibly because it's a really saturated market. People who are likely to fiddle themselves will go to techie sites that are long established. People who don't know will either ask an IT friend to fix it or chuck it in the car and take it to a computer store. It's a really hard one to crack.

That's tricky as a stand alone project but doable. It lacks that interaction but if it's on the right subject it can pull in a lot of readers.

Is there much of a support/info market for hi-tech sim designers? Is that a market you could exploit?

I've had forums I've given up on. Not everything works.

For the simulators i worked on there was little to no support. However most information about these simulators is either requires a security clearance or proprietary and cannot be disclosed. So that is one market i would love to tap into but i really don't think I would be allowed to.

The wiki was just a long shot. I am not good at documenting things so after thinking about it I would almost need help with that. And i do not really know anyone who has the know how/time to do it.

Why do you want to run your own board?

If all you want to do is provide technical support, why not instead join a board that does that and become an active contributor there, or even at multiple boards?

Maybe because:

It's hard to get ad revenue on other people's boards. ;)

It has just always been a dream of mine to run a successful website. A board just seems like the most fun.

No amount of SEO will help if the board isn't on a subject people want to talk about.

Oh, I thought he's changing it cause some of the people advised him above. I gave those links for his future website.

Thanks for the SEO suggestions. I had did most of those but submit a sitemap. Its easy to forget small things like that.

the idea of the website was to have many sections. Like a car section and a computer section and so on. Would it be better to maybe make a home page and then create separate boards for these different sections? Maybe something like how this website does where it has the community section where it only shows Cars section, Computers section, Appliance Section.... Or would that be a bad idea?

I would not be sure hoe to even tackle this but i'm sure could figure it out if this might be a good idea.

Sitemaps aren't much good on forums as the pages aren't static.

Having multiple boards would be a lot to manage and you still come back to the same question of expertise. People would visit them for an expert opinion on how to fix something. You don't want to start off with new users and have to say, I dunno, we'll have to wait for someone who knows the answer to sign up.
