Should I block India? - stupid spam

Post by vortexhlp » Fri May 04, 2012 12:50 am

I really am getting tired of 30% of my bandwidth being given to spammers and they mostly come from India. I know there are many English speakers over there but I'm just so sick of seeing 200+ users registered every day from spam. Maybe a better approach would be to force a administrative OK if they register from India?

I don't know, I'm out of options, I've tried various captcha's they just won't stop. Banning their IP's, emails, and usernames does nothing and it can only negatively affect the innocent if the odds are good enough.

What have you guys done that worked against spammers? These aren't spambots, just a bunch of spam-monkeys registering away.

Have you seen Preventing Spam in phpBB3?

The Q&A option with a few carefully chosen questions should prevent virtually all automated spam.

I have exactly same issue on my webmaster forum.

I think i will have to ban whole india IP group, but question is how to do it effectivelly in PHPBB.

Some ideas how to block IP ranges:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/website_t ... 474186.htm
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1397803

API tools which will return Visitor country based on his IP:
http://www.iplocationtools.com/api.html#b
http://www.ipgeo.com/api/
http://ipinfodb.com/ip_location_api.php

Please if anyone manage to implement this to your forum or website, let there know please. Maybe also Mod can be made which disalow signup of India country or others.

It's not necessary and one IP does not necessarily apply to one country.

Did you read the link in the first reply?

By the way, I just noticed you're using phpBB-SEO, not phpBB, which we don't support here.
